These pictures were taken at Alternative Health and Wellness to highlight the fact that sometimes people see us through our words, sometimes they see us despite our words, but we are all human no matter our gender identity or presentation. At the end of the day, we all bleed red. My thanks to those who allowed me the use of their picture.

The Human Element

When we look at our fellow humans so often we see right through them. And every once in a while there is an interaction that really touches us indelibly and leaves an impression. But through all our differences, there is a human element effecting and shaping the world around us. Stop and take a moment to really look at the people you encounter today, and find what you have in common. Because it's the human element that really matters. Humans at the Larame Project

November 22nd hundreds gathered at Glendale Community College's performance arts center to support the college for putting on the Larame Project. GCC decided to perform the Larame Project in honor of the 10 year anniversary of the death of Matthew Shephard. They were told that a church preaching hate of gays would show up to protest the event, the same church whose pastor is represented in the play, the Larame Project. Instead, all you could see outside GCC's Performing Arts Center were hundreds of students, H.E.R.O.s and other supporters. Sometimes standing silently in memory of matthew shephard and the very first angel action which took place at his funeral...sometimes singing Amazing Grace or some other hymnal, these people shared the love. Thank you to the students and faculty of GCC for standing firm and holding their play despite the threat of Fred Phelps attendance. And thank you to those two lovely ladies in the back working lights and sound who so often go unnoticed.

As people get used to having a humans4equality blog of their own, I am reposting the humans4equality posts here today and every day this week, although it can also be seen over on http://humans4equality.blogspot.com. Next Monday Gender DiverCity will resume posting once a week, but I will continue posting to Humans4Equality as often as I have photos sent in to humans4equality@gmail.com, up to once a day.

No matter your background, age, gender, orientation, race, or religion, the human race needs you to stand up for equal rights and protections for all people. This is not a black and white issue, it's a human rights issue. Stand with us (or sit with us) and send in your human picture. Just take a photo of yourself, or have a friend loved one take it for your, and send it to humans4equality@gmail.com. Be the change you want to see in the world. Be a H.E.R.O. (Human and Equal Rights Organizer) met tonight to discuss what is happening in Arizona, and specifically Phoenix. Plans were made, ideas, discussed, passion shared, and volunteers signed up for some specific tasks for the near future, including making angels wings to support the Larame Project over at Glendale Community College. If you want to learn more, go to www.be-a-hero.us, and if you are in Phoenix, stop by the Community Church of Hope, 4121 N. 7th Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013 at 6:30 PM on any Monday or Wednesday to be the change you want to see in the world.

Humans 4 Equality - a blog of it's own

As I move the first few posts over to this new blog, I thought I would take a moment to speak to how and why this blog started. Originally, Sean-Michael was working on a project called Gender DiverCity, a photographic attempt on his part to explore gender ...the way we see it internally, vs how it is perceived externally, and how we express gender in today's society. Hence http://genderdivercity.blogspot.com was born.

After 3 propositions in 3 different states passed banning gay marriage, and one state had an anti-gay adoption prop pass, not to mention the many failed attempts to gain job protections or educational protections for transgender people right here in AZ and all over the US... it became clear that not only does our society still not get that gender should not be a reason not to have equal rights, but homophobia is alive and well and even being preached from the pulpits in some places.

Just because one is in love with someone of the same gender... or just because one is born transgender, does not mean one should not receive medical care, education, or jobs, and just because one is in love with someone of the same gender does not mean one should not be able to visit loved ones in the hospital, or be buried next to one's spouse because it just isn't legally recognized. I know, it sounds so old school doesn't it? and yet veterans with same sex partners go through that now! We want equal rights, not special rights.

And so the blog entry titled All Humans are Created began the Humans 4 Equality thread. http://genderdivercity.blogspot.com/2008/11/all-humans-are-created-equal.html began it all, but it has become clear that there needs to be a Humans4Equality blogspot all it's own.

Now it has become clear that today people are needing to talk about gender identity and presentation, but also they are needing to talk about sexuality. Proclaiming your truth about sexual orientation? That's SO 80's! For you who are too young to remember, the chant of the 80's was "We're here, we're queer, get used to it." I know, I know, but it's back. We're here, we're queer, and apparently some people STILL haven't gotten used to it. Only now the common refrain is "A People, United, Can NEVER be divided!"

So stand with us now and send in your picture alone, with friends, with loved ones, or pets... to humans4equality@gmail.com and then visit humans4equality.blogspot.com and play your own version of where's waldo, watching for yourself and people you know on the blog. Gender DiverCity will continue along with the humans4equality theme, but now there is an easier URL to remember, and to share with your friends: http://humans4equality.blogspot.com bookmark it, or subscribe to the feed, and pass it along.

Marriage equality is only one piece of the picture. At this time in our nation there is a lack of equality for many be it lack protections from loss of job, home, child or other. There is especially a lack of understanding and legal protection for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queeer, Intersexed. All Humans are Created Equal

To my gender diverse readers, (that means everyone!)

You may have wondered why this blog has been silent this week? I have been busy on the streets and behind the scenes supporting Equal Rights. But never fear, Gender DiverCity does not stand silent, it stands in waiting. Waiting for what you may ask?

Waiting for each and every one of you to take a picture with yourself, be you "Cheese-head" or otherwise, proudly holding up the word human in an effort to remind the world that we are all humans. In this great nation, our founding fathers said that "we hold these truths self evident that all men are created equal" we should not have to fight for equal rights, but we do. Why? Because all humans have NOT YET been afforded the same rights and recognition under the law in this country.

California, Arizona, AND Florida have all voted (by narrow margins I might add) to add discrimination into their constitution. This is unprecedented and just plain wrong. In a time when 70% of all marriages end in divorce, why anyone would legislate against love is beyond me. We need more love in this world. No matter what your political leanings, I am sure you agree with that.

This month I have spent most of my time in bed or at the doctor's so it has given me a lot of time to think back over the last year and some of my favorite memories. I apologize for the spotty posting here at Gender DiverCity of Late and have set a reminder so that if I do nothing else on Mondays at least I will post here.

This week I have decided to share some of my favorite memories of friends new and old I have worked with for this blog. Moving, please be patient (some personal notes)

I am in the process of moving into a new home. I'm still living in Phoenix, AZ near the beautiful South Mountain, but in a nicer, larger house with a gorgeous view of the mountain. My artistic side is feeling inspired, I feel more grounded here, and I suspect much creativity and spiritual joy will result from this move. I am grateful to my Mother for making this move possible by letting me lease the house for her.

I have received mixed responses to this blog. Most are positive, but occasionally I have had angry and violent responses and acusations that I'm just in this for the money. Not sure why that would be a problem. Are artists not allowed to be paid for our work? But the fact of the matter is, that I make no money from this project at this time. Actually, if anything it's a drain on the resources, but it's one that I do not mind. I pay my own travel, food, etc. when I go elsewhere to take pictures, hence most of my pictures being taken in Phoenix, AZ where I live, and Southern California where my parents live. I do hope to visit some friends in New Mexico in the next year, and take pictures while I'm there as well.

This blog was created for free on blogspot.com and I was blessed with the gift of a camera from my grandfather when he passed away, which is what I usually use. I do have some film from my HOLGA camera that I need to develop, but until I find the time, location, and money for supplies I won't be posting any of those results. So in the mean time most everything you see here will be digitally taken with my camera.

It's my birthday!!!

This week I celebrated my 37th birthday with loved ones and took a break from my online pursuits. New Gender DiverCity photos will be added Monday the 28th.

For the purpose of this blog Gender Identity is how one personally identifies along the gender spectrum: male, female, bigender, androgyne, etc. and Gender Presentation is how one expresses that identity to the world through your mannerisms, dress, hairstyle, etc. Others perceive our gender through a lens of their own thoughts and experiences. Sometimes perception and identity match, but sometimes they do not. Gender DiverCity is an attempt to look at the diverse humanity in our world, showing people's gender identity and presentation through their words, and my camera lens. My thought is that this blog brings together both one's inner voice and outer expression in one place for others to see and ponder.

The First Family

The first family I photographed surprised me. We met at Opportunities Cafe and took pictures till they closed. I expected their words to be ordinary like Male, Female, girl, and the like.

There were anything but simple words chosen. This is one thing I adore about this project so far, the way people are so truly diverse, even to the point of surprising me. The person I expected to write something unusual wrote "Male" and I now realize, I still need to let go of some of my expectations.

A Mother, Father, and two daughters. The older daughter's boyfriend also was there, but he didn't feel like having his picture taken.It sounds like a good ol' all American family right? They are.

All present to the world as the male or female person they were identified as at birth, yet that is not what they wrote down. As you can see, they each had very interesting things to say. Click on their pictures to see a larger view of the photo.

"Gender DiverCity" Photography Project: Seeking Participants

I have often been told I'm not man enough, too butch, too effeminate, or that "real men do ____" (fill in the blank) Sometimes it is said in jest, sometimes people truly feel such things about gender. Since I often explore my thoughts and feelings about life in my art, I thought this would be a great topic for my first photo project. But as I began taking pictures of men and their words about how they felt about gender, I discovered women, genderqueer people, and a slew of variously identified people who wanted to participate. So why discriminate!?! Their diversity has inspired me.

What is this you are doing?
I am photographing people and their words. More specifically, I ask people to write about their feelings around gender and their own gender identity or presentation on a piece of plastic, and then I photograph them with it.

Why are you doing this?
Gender DiverCity is a photo project through which I am attempting to show the diversity of gender presentation and identity among humans, and their own words about that gender presentation or identity. I have noticed that sometimes people see us through our words, sometimes people see us despite our words, sometimes our words are ignored, and sometimes our words change how others perceive us. For this reason, I ask participants to write some of their own words down on plastic which is included in the photo shoot.

Who can participate?
To infinity, and beyond! Human beings of all shapes, sizes, orientations, and gender presentations or identities, are asked to participate. From gender-normative, heterosexual truckers to flamboyant drag nuns and everything in between and beyond, all are welcome here. Whether you have written a book on gender, or never given it a day of thought in your life, I will gladly photograph you.

What will this be used for?
I will use the images towards a variety of projects. Currently I am putting them together in portfolio format to bring to a gender diversity conference where I hope to find more participants. Images may appear in galleries, on my art website in the future, on the Gender DiverCity blog, as well as in a calendar or book form. Participants will have to sign a photo release form, to be emailed once you contact me.

What will I get in return?
Why, the pleasure of being photographed of course! Beyond that, I will send you an emailed JPEG version of the image or images within a year of the time I photograph you. If you wish to also have a personal portrait which is not related to this project done, please let me know. In total, I will send you up to 5 JPEG images of yourself in exchange for your participation.

I'd like to participate, but I'm nervous about having my name/face used. How can you protect my identity?
Names/initials and other identifying information will not be used in association with the images, unless given permission by the participant. As you can see in some of the examples on my Gender DiverCity Blog, It is not necessary to use your name, or even your face in the photographs. You may choose how much exposure you would like, and which name you prefer to have associated with your pictures if any. For some photographs I have used only a first name, for others no name.

May I pose nude?
Possibly. Artistic nudes may be a part of this project, but do not make up the bulk of the photographs. This is something we would need to discuss in person.

Do you know you spelled "Diversity" wrong?
Yes I am aware that "Gender DiverCity" is perceived as a misspelling, as spell-check insisted on informing me. This was intentional. I feel these photos show us a glimpse into the great human community. Through my lens, a "city" of human beings in all their various colors, shapes, and sizes, is quickly developing.

Where do we meet, where can I be photographed, and when?
(Currently in Arizona, and California only)
As this is highly individual, we will discuss this via email. If you're nervous about meeting someone you have never met in person before, bring a friend (I most likely will do this myself, as I'm disAbled, and do not drive.) If you have a preferance for location, please let me know and we will discuss our options via email.

What should I wear?
Whatever you like. I only ask that you choose clothes you feel comfortable in, be they work attire, dress up, or your every day attire. Solid, light colors do help the words show up more, but there are ways around this if you simply must wear the fabulous black shirt covered in pink elephants.

What will you use to photograph?
I usually do not have access to any fancy lighting equipment, although occasionally a friend will give me access to their studio. Most often, just daylight and my Nikon D40X we fondly call "Big Bertha" Ocassionally I do use a medium format camera called a Holga. I will be photographing using digital SLR, or medium format film, and may also use a point and shoot digital camera at times. If it takes pictures and I can get my hands on it, I may use it. That said, Big Bertha is my primary camera, and will most often be used.
